ICE BREAKERS
These short
activities will
encourage
sharing & listening
and provide a way to
introduce my classes
Name the Food
Gather all the students and make them sit in a circle. Every person sitting in the circle has to introduce themselves and then name the food they like, which has to start with the first letter of their name. For example 'My name is Mandy. I like Mars Bars'. The next person has to remember what the previous person said, recite the whole thing and then introduce himself/herself. |
Mingle! Mingle!
To play 'Mingle! Mingle!' distribute strips of blank paper and a pen. Each person must write a question on the strip such as, 'what's your favorite song?', 'which is your favorite movie?', 'what's your favorite cuisine?' and so on. Let the students roam around shouting 'Mingle! Mingle!' before you say 'stop', and bring the class to an immediate halt. Once everyone's stopped moving around, the student must grab the closest person and ask the question. After talking for about 30 seconds, the moving begins. |
Sharing Game
Each student starts the "Sharing Game" by grabbing a handful of grapes. Once each student has taken some grapes, explain that they will be sharing one fact about themselves for each grape that they have in their hand. You can give students ideas of what to share, such as their favorite book, the number of siblings they have or their place of birth. |
Two Extremes
Keep the students active by playing the "Two Extremes" game. The facilitator will have a list of items that fall at opposite ends of the spectrum, such as: chocolate or vanilla, surfing or skiing or country or rap. The students start standing in a big group, but when each choice is read, they move to the side of the room that the facilitator indicates is associated with their choice. Students will see all of the things that they have in common with their new classmates. |
