I teach dance education because dance saved my life, and I want to pass its values on to the next generation. As an outlet, the arts have served as a platform for my well-being by providing a stage to build up my self-confidence, social awareness, and positive outlook on life in an ever-changing world. Dance teaches students to understand the basic concepts of art and beauty through movement, and it helps young people to become citizens who are more aware of the world around them, which in turn makes for a better community.
In my classes, I provide dance experiences that are created to encourage personal growth, both physically and socially. I work to build my student's confidence by modeling a positive attitude and emphasizing the importance of teamwork in all of our dance endeavors.
As a dance teacher I intend to guide students through an engaging class that encompasses a variety of fun challenges. I aim for my students to see me as a teacher who is good with communication, organized, timely, understanding, and dedicated to the idea that all students can dance. I have it in mind to accomplish these things in my classroom through clear directions, constructive feedback, and patience.
The goals I have for my students are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound, or “SMART.” We will study movement concepts using ballet, modern, and contemporary technique as a base, along with anatomical terms of the body, dance concepts through solo-body and ensemble activities, performance concepts using peer evaluations and discussion that includes constructive feedback, social concepts like awareness of self and others, and basic classroom structure that heightens self-confidence and teamwork.
I will know my students are achieving these goals when I see them talking about their experience and sharing with others what they know. I will also know they are actively learning when their self-confidence can be seen growing though class participation and performance. When students are making connections of dance through time, I will feel like the goal has been met, and we can move forward with more engaging and stimulating content.
